Ron Smith

Master's Level Intern

Ron Smith is a Master’s Level Intern completing his graduate degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Southern Methodist University. He previously earned a Bachelor’s degree from Swarthmore College and a law degree from The University of Texas School of Law. He is trained to facilitate Prepare & Enrich® to support couples in their relational development, including pre-engagement, pre-marital, and post-marital experiences. He has taken the requisite coursework to work with adolescents using the modalities of play and activity therapy. He has also trained to lead groups related to grief, bereavement, and mourning.

Before enrolling in the Counseling Program at Southern Methodist University, he practiced law for over fifteen years. He encountered clients in demanding situations, worked with them to learn about their problems, and helped counsel them to positive outcomes.
He believes that mental health problems faced by individuals are rooted in deep questions of life. He works with clients to understand the problems they are facing, discuss their values, and help them determine their own paths forward. He does not believe that counseling is “one size-fits-all.” He believes that clients hold the answers to their problems and sees his role as walking beside clients as they search their hearts and choose the path that is right for them.

Under Section 2799B-6 of the Public Health Service Act, the “No Surprises Act,” health care providers are required to give clients who do not have insurance or who choose not to use their insurance an estimate of the bill for health care items and services.

You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate (GFE) showing costs of items and services you can reasonably expect for your health care needs. The Good Faith Estimate does not include any unknown or unexpected costs that may arise during treatment.

If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you may dispute the bill.

  • You may contact the health care provider listed to let them know the billed charges are higher than the GFE. You may ask them to update the bill to match the GFE, negotiate the bill, or ask if financial assistance is available.
  • You may start a dispute resolution process with the U.S.Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). If you choose to use the dispute resolution process, you must start the dispute process within 120 calendar days of the date on the original bill.
